September 2014 saw the launch of Chorley Pages
Accompanied by a Facebook page and Twitter account, sign-ups started to steadily come in along with lots of support from the local businesses and groups in Chorley.
2015 was right around the corner, and lots of new businesses joined as people spread the word.
In December 2016, NRD Media took ownership of Chorley Pages from Big Lamp Web Design.
NRD Media completely re-builds the Chorley Pages website from the ground up
February 2017 – We re-built the website on a new, more powerful platform. This allowed us to add more attractive elements to the user interface, and also new sections like “Special Offers” in the business listings.
During February and March we will be contacting all the current businesses, and encouraging them to ensure their profile is complete and contains more information to ensure the website is as useful as possible to its visitors, and therefore drive more business in to Chorley businesses.
We’ll also be generating more awareness of Chorley Pages through sponsored Facebook and Twitter advertising, as well as creating some printed media to be placed around the Chorley area.
About Chorley Pages
What is ChorleyPages?
Launched October 2014, ChorleyPages is a website project aimed at promoting Chorley and surrounding areas. In particular, the project aims to shine a bright light on the many small, independent businesses and traders, events, clubs, good causes and talented people of Chorley, Lancashire.
We are offering free sign-up for all businesses/organisations, which includes:
- A dedicated full page with your branding, description, contact details, image gallery to show off your products, premises or examples of your work, and links to your website and/or Social Media pages. Plus your page can also show your opening hours, a location map and even embedded YouTube videos.
- Banner ads and promotional features around the website
- A categorised directory listing
Listings on ChorleyPages are available for:
- Independent local businesses, shops & market traders
- Pubs, clubs, restaurants & entertainment venues
- Any tradesmen/service providers covering the Chorley area
- Local good causes, charities & fundraisers
- Events & promotions
- Home-based businesses
- Freelancers, entertainers, sports & social clubs/groups, business networks & campaigns
- Artists, musicians, writers & creative individuals
- Anything Chorley-related will be considered for publication: news, views, features, articles, memories of Chorley, and of course photographs. All contributors will be given full attribution.
A bit more…
The ChorleyPages website is modern, searchable, and mobile-phone friendly, to help people find services and products in Chorley whenever they need them, whether they are in the office, on the sofa, or out and about.
Long term, I will also be seeking sponsorship to help fund the running and continued expansion of the project. If you are interested in sponsoring this project (enhanced advertising opportunities are available), please get in touch at email@example.com to enquire.
This is a social enterprise rather than a profit-making one, and the aim is to encourage Chorley people to spend their time and money in Chorley rather than going elsewhere. Whether it’s business to consumer, or business to business, everyone is welcome, so please get involved and help our town continue to thrive.
Please feel free to spread the word to anyone you know in the Chorley area who could benefit from this project – the more people get involved, the more successful it will be. I am also looking for contributions of local photographs, articles, features and news relating to Chorley, so even if you do not have a business or anything in particular to promote, feel free to get involved.
In the last week, I’ve been out and about around Chorley, handing out flyers, and talking to small business owners about ChorleyPages. I’ve been asked a few questions along the way, so thought it would be a good idea to try and answer a few of them here.
How can this be free?
I am offering free sign up to encourage as many businesses/people to get involved as possible. I believe that this is necessary to create something of value. Long-term, I hope to attract sponsorship and paid advertisers to support the project, however, I don’t think it is reasonable to ask anyone to pay to advertise on a new website with an unknown amount of visitors.
Initially, the website will show a few ‘pay per click’ ads to help raise funds to run the site. Once the website is established and attracts regular visitors (which it will only do if there is plenty of content available), only then will enhanced (paid) advertising options be offered – this will allow any business to further enhance their profile and visibility on the website for a small fee. This will include banner advertising on the homepage and in key areas around the website, and also ‘sponsor a page’ options, so, for example, one business could opt to sponsor the ‘shopping’ section, another could sponsor the ‘food and drink’ section, and so on.
What's in it for me? (advertiser)
Lots! A chance to advertise online for FREE. The website is designed to work well in search engines so expect to see ChorleyPages pages appearing in Google, Bing and Yahoo! search results for Chorley related searches.
In addition, I have created the website in such a way that the people of Chorley, visitors to the town (and potential visitors) can browse or search directly on the website, whether from a PC, tablet or phone, to find whatever they are looking for in Chorley.
Businesses that already have a website and are looking to increase their own search engine visibility/rankings (SEO), each ChorleyPages page can include links which can help boost rankings of their own site.
For businesses without a website, whether that’s because they feel they don’t need one, don’t want one, or can’t afford to invest in one, each ChorleyPages page has its own dedicated page address (URL) and can be used as a basic web presence. On this website, all are presented equally, regardless of size, scale, or marketing budget.
What's in it for you? (NRD Media)
Short-term: nothing but hard work. But we think it will be worth it!
Why exactly are you doing this?
Like many, I have witnessed a perceived decline in the town’s prosperity in recent years, along with most towns in the UK. I believe that things are slowly getting better and want to help that process along, using the technical skills and marketing experience that I have accumulated, to create something new and different to promote the area.
It’s a new approach, one based firmly in the 21st century, relying on modern technology and internet marketing techniques to enhance and promote all businesses equally, even those with traditional or old-fashioned roots. I believe it is a viable project that will attract funding and sponsorship in the long-term, and that is why I have invested my time in setting up the project.
How can this help encourage people to 'shop local' in the Chorley area?
By presenting as many of the town’s small businesses, which covers a huge variety of goods and services, all together, side by side, I hope to demonstrate just how much we have in the town. I believe that people will be encouraged to shop local if they believe they can find everything they need/want right here in Chorley, without having to travel out to Preston, Bolton, Blackburn, Wigan or anywhere else.
ChorleyPages is intended to show a ‘virtual high street’ of shops, market stalls and other businesses, all presented together on an equal footing, in a way that has never been attempted before: promotional, fun, modern, browsable and searchable.
In addition, I hope to encourage good local business-to-business relationships.
This will work best if a wide range of businesses and people get involved, by signing up, spreading the word, and most of all by using the website to find services and goods in the area. It won’t happen overnight, but over time I hope to get as many as possible of Chorley’s businesses, groups and ventures featured, and really show off the best that the area has to offer, both in the town centre and surrounding areas and villages.
